WhatsApp payment reminders are worth setting up if you chase more than a handful of overdue invoices a month, and Meta's charge is small, about ₹0.115 per delivered utility message in India. The real decision is how you connect WhatsApp to your books: the TallyPrime or Zoho Books add-on for simple needs, or a custom integration when reminders have to follow your own credit rules.
Most businesses we talk to in Ahmedabad already chase payments on WhatsApp. It's just done by hand. Someone in accounts opens the outstanding report on Friday, copies amounts into chats one by one, and skips the customers who "promised Monday". When that person is on leave, the follow-ups stop.
What are your options?
There are four practical routes. Prices are from each vendor's own page, last checked 23 October 2026.
| Option | How it works | Published price | Fits best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| TallyPrime with WhatsApp | Send invoices and overdue reminder letters from inside Tally | ₹1,300 a year + GST, plus a messaging wallet | Tally is your main system and you remind in batches |
| Zoho Books WhatsApp integration | Invoice notifications and automated payment reminders | Message credits bought inside Zoho Books | You already invoice in Zoho Books |
| WhatsApp platform such as Interakt | Team inbox, campaigns and APIs on top of WhatsApp | Growth plan $55 a month, plus Meta charges | You also want sales chat and a shared inbox |
| Custom integration with your ERP | Your system calls Meta's Cloud API directly | Quoted after scoping | Rules depend on credit limits, branches or customer type |
Tally's WhatsApp for Business page lists the ₹1,300 subscription and a ₹2,700 wallet top-up, and says you can send payment reminders in bulk using pre-approved templates. Its help page covers sending invoices and overdue reminder letters but doesn't mention scheduling, so someone still presses the button. Zoho's WhatsApp integration page says it can send automated payment reminder notifications, and that Zoho becomes your Business Service Provider once connected. Interakt's pricing page showed US dollar prices when we checked. All are vendor pages; confirm terms for your account.
How much do WhatsApp payment reminders cost?
Meta's pricing page says it has charged per message since 1 July 2025, and only for delivered messages. Its India rate card, effective 1 October 2026, lists ₹0.115 per utility message and ₹0.8631 per marketing message (last checked 23 October 2026).
Say 400 customers have open invoices and each gets three reminders a month: before the due date, on it, and a week after. That's 1,200 messages, about ₹138 to Meta before taxes. Your tool's fee will usually be the bigger number.
Two October 2026 changes on the same page matter. Utility messages sent while a customer service window is open are now billed instead of free, and service replies beyond 1,000 a month per phone number are charged.
Which reminders count as utility and which as marketing?
Meta's template guidelines say a utility template must be non-promotional and specific to the user, and they use a payment reminder as an example. Add "pay today and get 5% off your next order" and it becomes marketing; Meta can recategorise a template automatically when that happens. The same page treats subscription renewal reminders as marketing even if the customer asked for them. Keep it plain: invoice number, amount, due date, payment link.
What rules apply in India?
Consent first. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says you can only message people who gave you their number and opted in, and you must respect every opt-out, including ones made off WhatsApp. Add a consent line to your customer onboarding form.
Data location next. Meta's Cloud API registration docs list India (IN) as a local storage option, which keeps message data at rest in India. It's set when the number is registered, so decide early.
Then the MSME angle. Under section 15 of the MSMED Act, a buyer has to pay a micro or small supplier within the agreed period, capped at 45 days, or within 15 days if there's no written agreement, as Taxmann's FAQ on section 15 explains. If you're a registered micro or small supplier, put your Udyam number and the due date in the reminder. Your CA can confirm how it applies to your contracts.

How long does setup take?
With Tally or Zoho, most of the time goes into Meta's side: business verification, registering the number and getting templates approved.
A custom integration follows our normal process: a few days of ideation and planning, 1 to 2 weeks of design if there's a screen to build, 2 to 8 weeks of development and 1 to 2 weeks of testing. A plain "send reminders from our ERP" job sits at the short end.
What to have ready before you start
- A phone number for the business account, and a check on whether your current WhatsApp number can move across
- Business documents for Meta's verification
- Customer masters with one correct mobile number per party
- Reminder wording for each stage, with no offers mixed in
- A payment link or UPI QR you're happy to share
- A named person who answers replies
Mistakes we see
Sending from a personal number through an unofficial bulk tool. It works until the number is blocked, and your customer chats go with it.
Chasing customers who already paid. If reminders run off a sheet updated weekly, the person who paid on Tuesday gets chased on Thursday. Reminders should read live outstanding data.
Ignoring replies. A reminder answered with "please send the ledger" and then three days of silence does more harm than none.
How do you know it's working?
Compare three numbers month by month: debtor days, the amount overdue by more than 30 days, and how many invoices still needed a phone call. Tally's outstanding and ageing reports give you the first two. If nothing moves after two or three months, check delivery and read counts and your template wording before blaming the channel.
How Codelix handles this
When reminders need your own rules (different terms per customer, holds on accounts over their limit, separate messages per branch), we build them as a workflow automation on the official WhatsApp Business API, connected to Tally, your ERP or a custom system. For a society management company running 15 apartment complexes with 4,000+ flats, our case study describes residents getting automated reminders before due dates, and the platform has processed ₹2Cr+ in online maintenance payments since launch. We quote after a free scoping call; our pricing page explains how billing works.
