The right time to move from Tally to ERP is when your problems stop being about accounting. If your books are fine but stock, production, purchase and dispatch live in Excel and WhatsApp, an ERP will help. If you're mostly doing GST returns and invoicing for a handful of users, TallyPrime is still enough, and switching early just adds cost.
Most businesses we talk to in Ahmedabad didn't plan their software. Tally came in on the CA's advice years ago, Excel filled the gaps, and WhatsApp groups took over the rest. It works until an order gets promised without checking stock, or the month-end close drags on for days. The hard part is telling a real limit apart from a bad week.
Signs your business has outgrown Tally
Tally is good at accounting and GST. The trouble starts when the rest of the business needs the same data and can't get to it:
- Your stock in Tally rarely matches the godown, and someone keeps a separate Excel sheet "to be safe"
- Production, job work or BOMs are tracked on paper or in spreadsheets, so you don't know real cost per unit
- Sales promises delivery dates without being able to see production or stock
- The same order is entered two or three times, by sales, stores and accounts
- Reports for the owner are compiled by hand and are a week old by the time they're read
- You've crossed, or are about to cross, ₹5 crore in turnover and e-invoicing has added another manual step
One or two is normal. Four or more usually means the workarounds cost more than fixing them.
We saw this on an ERP project for a high-volume enterprise, bigger than most readers here. The client ran on Excel, WhatsApp and a decade-old desktop accounting application that froze when more than five users logged in, and monthly reconciliation took four days. Smaller firms hit the same walls, just later.
Do you have to replace Tally completely?
No. Plenty of businesses keep Tally for the accountant and CA and run an ERP for operations, with the two connected. Our 4bitx product page says it can integrate with Tally via XML API, though it also has its own accounting.
Moving from Tally to ERP: what are the options?
There are roughly four routes. We've used published prices where the vendor shows them, last checked 21 October 2026.
| Option | What it is | Published price | Fits best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| TallyPrime Gold | Tally with multi-user access on several PCs | ₹67,500 + 18% GST lifetime, or ₹2,250 a month on rental | Accounting is the main need and you have several users |
| ERPNext | Open-source ERP, self-hosted or on Frappe Cloud | Software free; Frappe Cloud hosting from ₹410 a month; implementation extra | You have an implementation partner and fairly standard processes |
| Odoo | Modular ERP sold per user per month | One app free; paid plans per user, see its pricing page | You want a large app catalogue and can adapt to it |
| Custom or modular ERP (for example 4bitx) | Built or configured around your own workflow | 4bitx setup ₹2.5 lakh to ₹25 lakh+, plus AMC | Your process is specific, such as manufacturing, job work or multi-godown |
The Tally figures are from TallyPrime's own buy page, which also lists Silver at ₹22,500 + GST for a single PC. ERPNext's figures are from Frappe's pricing page, which says implementation is handled separately by partners. Odoo's pricing page showed US dollar prices when we checked, so confirm the India price before budgeting. All three are vendor pages.
How much does it cost to move from Tally to an ERP?
The licence is often the smallest number. The real cost depends on how many modules and users you need, how messy your data is, which integrations you want (e-invoice APIs, WhatsApp, a website), training for floor staff, and hosting plus yearly maintenance.
For our own product we publish a range: the 4bitx page lists a one-time setup of ₹2.5 lakh to ₹25 lakh+, an annual AMC of 15% to 20% of setup cost, and GST API integration and cloud hosting billed separately. For a custom build we don't guess. We quote after a scoping call, and our pricing page explains how that works.

How long does the migration take?
For 4bitx, its product page says implementation typically takes 4 to 12 weeks, depending on business complexity, number of modules and data migration. A custom ERP follows our usual process: a few days of ideation and planning, 1 to 2 weeks of design, 2 to 8 weeks of agile development and 1 to 2 weeks of testing before go-live.
Switch at a month-end or quarter-end, and run both systems in parallel for one closing cycle. It's extra work, but it catches mismatches before they reach your GST returns.
What to have ready before you start
- Cleaned-up masters: customers, vendors, items and ledgers without duplicates
- Opening balances and stock as on the cut-over date, signed off by your CA
- A written list of how orders, purchases and production really move today, including the workarounds
- One person on your side who owns the project and can make decisions
- Your GSTIN details and e-invoice and e-way bill access, if they apply to you
On GST: e-invoicing applies to businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18 onwards, effective 1 August 2023, under Notification 10/2023-Central Tax published by the GST Council (last checked 21 October 2026). Whatever you choose has to generate those invoices cleanly, so test it on real invoices before go-live.
How do you know the ERP is working?
Pick four or five numbers before you start and measure them again three months after go-live:
- Days taken to close the books each month
- Gap between system stock and physical stock at the last count
- Number of orders entered more than once
- Time from order to dispatch
- How old the owner's reports are when they're read
If those don't move, it's usually a training or process problem, not a software one.
Common mistakes we see
- Budgeting for the licence and forgetting implementation and AMC
- Migrating ten years of dirty data instead of clean masters plus opening balances
- Training accounts and forgetting the shop floor
- Not putting in writing who owns the data, the hosting account and any custom code
- Not asking where the data is hosted and how you'd export it if you leave
How Codelix handles this
Our ERP and CRM development work starts with a free consultation, then a detailed quotation, an upfront deposit and milestone-based instalments, with an NDA if you need one. For manufacturers in the ₹5 crore to ₹100 crore range, 4bitx is often the faster route since it already handles GST, inventory and production. If your process doesn't fit it, we'll say so.
